Design Secrets: The Art of Sports Promotion

As a graphic designer, I often get the opportunity to work with talented individuals across various fields, and working with Mark Ewen, a professional MMA fighter in the PFL, took on a personal touch. With his fight against Yassin Chtatou at the Hydro last Saturday, the stakes were high, and so was the excitement.

In today's digital age, social media serves as a powerful platform for athletes to connect with their fans, build their brand, and share their journey. Promotional graphics play a vital role in this ecosystem, serving not only to announce upcoming fights but also to generate buzz and anticipation. Engaging visuals can attract attention, convey essential information, and enhance visibility, ultimately leading to increased engagement and support from fans.

However, despite their importance, many promotional graphics fall into the trap of being bland and uninspired. In a world filled with constant content, it’s crucial to stand out from the crowd. A dull design can easily be overlooked, especially in the fast-paced social media environment where every scroll counts. This is where the challenge lies: how can we create graphics that not only inform but also captivate?

For Mark, I aimed to create graphics that reflected his personality and fighting spirit. I designed both a Fight Week and a Fight Night graphic, focusing on stylization to enhance their appeal.

Using a bold colour palette, I incorporated elements that evoked the energy of fight night. I chose a classic serif typeface for both graphics to draw the viewer in. This choice was deliberate, as many sports graphics often rely on bold, stylised oblique sans serif fonts. I wanted my designs to invite engagement while still maintaining a powerful presence. By blending a classic feel with modern intensity, I crafted a visual narrative that fans could connect with.

By making the graphics visually striking, I aimed to elevate the promotional material beyond the ordinary, inviting fans to engage with Mark’s story and rally behind him as he prepared for his fight.

The feedback from Mark was overwhelmingly positive, which reinforced the idea that creative promotional graphics can truly make a difference. It’s not just about informing fans; it’s about telling a story, building excitement, and creating a lasting impression.

As athletes and fighters consider their promotional materials, I encourage them to embrace the creative possibilities. Social media promotional graphics don’t need to be boring; with a little thought and artistry, they can be powerful tools for engagement and brand building.
